The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) hosted a delegation from Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS) Limited which ended their five days visit in Zanzibar on 7th October, 2016. WAPCOS intends to establish Zanzibar Institute of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (ZIFOS) under the tripartite collaboration of SUZA, Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Livestock and Fisheries and WAPCOS itself.

While in Zanzibar, the delegation had an opportunity to share views with some government of Zanzibar executives including Hon. Hamad Rashid Mohamed, the Minister for Agriculture, Natural Resources, Livestock and Fisheries and his Principal Secretary, Mr. Juma Ali Juma. They also had discussion with Ms. Khadija Bakari Juma, the Principal Secretary Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT), Zanzibar; they then had intensive discussion with their host, Prof. Idris Ahmada Rai, the Vice Chancellor of SUZA.

The delegation also paid a visit to the Consul General of India in Zanzibar, His Excellency Mr. M. C. Barupal at Indian Chancery, Migombani. Other visited places were fish landing sites at Malindi and Mazizini, the SUZA Tropical Research Centre for Oceanography, Environment and Natural Resources (TROCEN) at Nkrumah Campus, Beit el Ras and the planned site for the establishment of ZIFOS at Kambini, Wete District in Pemba.

Giving out his remarks on the project, Hon. Hamad Rashid Mohamed commended WAPCOS saying that their intention has been very proper as it is conforming to the government planning under vision 2020 which looks forward to boost marine fisheries in Zanzibar.

Furthermore, Ms. Khadija Bakari Juma, the Principal Secretary Ministry of Education and Vocational Training assured WAPCOS that MoEVT is ready provide its full support and cooperation in seeing that the project is standing firm. “India is a very close friend of Zanzibar since long time ago and she has been supporting many fields educationally hence benefit Zanzibar and her people through building their working capacity”, she added.

On the other side, Prof. Rai and SUZA Management Team with their visitors Prof. Mohan Joseph Modayil, Adviser, WAPCOS, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, Dr. Dubey Rajesh Prakash, Senior General Manager of WAPCOS and Mr. Joy Pothanikkattu Thressiamma, Fishery Engineer, WAPCOS then engaged in deep discussion which touched many areas including the pre project phase of the proposed ZIFOS, academic matters, infrastructure development of the project, support facilities to mention but a few.

After the constructive discussion it was pledged that a Rapid Needs Assessment Report based on the feedback from concerned stakeholders will soon be submitted to be followed by signing of a memorandum of understanding between the parties on mutually agreed upon terms.
